Thanks for all the replies.
I'll try fslint, which seemed the most popular solution.
But before doing that, it occurred to me to ask about Picasa,
which is now available under Linux, I believe.
I thought I had read of this being used to organize photos under Windows.
Does anyone use it for this under Linux?
I was a bit surprised no-one mentioned it.
