Thanks for the response. Obviously, I didn't spend enough time researching
this issue...I was under the assumption
(wrongly, as it turned out) that the debian package management system used a
binary database that could only be queried
with an executable like dpkg-query and didn't bother to actually check
/var/lib/dpkg.
