Thanks for the suggestion - parted had them marked as linux-swap.
However, I stumbled upon a fix.
If I mkfs.ext2 /dev/sda2 then mkswap /dev/sda2 it works.
I had tried dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/sda2 bs=512 count=10 before but
perhaps i needed to overwrite all of or the end of the partition and not
just the start?
weird.
