In case the laptop is able to boot from a USB device you can boot a
Linux system straight off a USB stick. Download a system image (e.g.
Ubuntu) and use unetbootin (http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/) to
create a bootable USB stick.
Also very handy for test-driving new hardware with linux ...
