I pasted it from an xterm where I'd catted the file odd.txt above. It's
pasting into a standard textarea window.
Remember the other symptom...odd subject lines in emails.

is this text pasted into a WYSIWYG area? if it's pasted from something like
OpenOffice or Word, then there could be some stray control characters being
pasted as well?
