 It might be to do with the source app.

 When I created files with accents in them in a terminal, and cut &
pasted them, there was no problem. Cut & pasting from either MS Word
on windows, Firefox on Windows, Preview (pdf) on OSX - all had
problems. Can you give iconv or similar a command asking it to guess
the encoding of a text file ?
