The logs show some detection of USB devices and an acpid action around
the time the keyboard stopped responding, so that's plausible. However,
sudo /etc/init.d/hal stop
sudo /etc/init.d/acpid stop
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart
hasn't had any effect.
Meanwhile, I'm growing to like TWM.
