Thanks for your suggestion.
It's not really clear to me that something like the Buffalo Linkstation
would actually use less energy than a machine sleeping until wake-on-LAN?
(I see the Linkstation Mini, which seems to be the smallest, consumes 10w.)

Also, I'm not clear how the Linkstation would attach to the internet.
Does it contain an ADSL modem?

I should say that I do not know what I am talking about.
I'm not sure what sort of sleep a server like Elara's HP goes into.

I've been very struck by how little power my ancient Thinkpad T23 uses
when sleeping in RAM (I assume).
Some recent change in thinkpad-acpi under Fedora-10
seems to have improved the sleep-to-RAM facility enormously.
My Thinkpads (T43 and T23) go to sleep as soon as the lid is closed,
and seem to remain alive for much longer than they used to.
