Anti-virus scanners on Windows have a way of transparently intercepting POP3
connections so that they can scan them for malware. They don't speak IMAP
though, because that's harder.

You didn't say where you try this from. If you tried it from the Windows
machine, try it from another machine. Also try it when logged in to the
remote machine for comparison (ie. telnet localhost 110).
