It has been a while for me now since I used it but in answer to #2
Kismet ( http://www.kismetwireless.net/ ) had options to read out
wireless networks it has found plus the SSID and encryption which is
handy for finding open wireless lans. In the alternative you can have
it play any sounds etc. It could also GPS tag them from memory as well.
I'll just say though, listen to Michael, unless it's named something
that makes it obvious its free for all your on shaky legal ground.
