It's worth thinking about Rockbox compatibility:
http://www.rockbox.org/
Rockbox is free software replacement firmware for a (limited) variety of mp3
players. It plays loads of formats and adds other features. I have an
iRiver h10 5Gb and have been using Rockbox more than happily for about 2
years. The default firmware couldn't play videos, couldn't play .ogg files,
etc. but with Rockbox it can.
It runs on some Cowon iaudio devices, but it's often the older devices, so
you may have to dig around a bit to find supported hardware.
