Interesting question - one which I regularly consider myself.
Totally Depends really on your requirements. I know many have built boxes
with OpenSolaris to get the goodness of ZFS and snapshots/time-slider
(which is *totally* amazing). I wouldn't get trust my data to btrfs or
nilfs...
Occasionally sites like Misco and Komplett offer specials on low-end
server systems (like the HP proliant ml115 for instance, which can hold 4
drives comfortably, or the DELL PowerEdge T105 which could hold 4 at a
push)... Generally these can be had for <200yoyos without OS, but they
only happen occasionally..
If all you want is something small with a few USB drives hanging off it,
then perhaps something like a SheevaPlug would do ya, which I'm sure can
be had for less than 100yoyos :-)
Plenty of options, depends on requirements and budget.
