Hi Bernard,
I would have to recommend on of the HP Procurve switches.
I got a 1400-8G recently when my netgear decided it didn't like talking to other switches and it is fantastic.
The 24 port is only €260 from elara, and yes, they still have a lifetime warranty.
The other nice thing is that they are fanless. I bought a Cisco a few years back and had to get rid of it because it was so noisy.

The only major consideration from a VOIP perspective is whether or not you need PoE, and that costs....

Subject: Re: [ILUG] (OT) Network Switch recommendation
Hi Guys,
Thanks for all the help and suggestions. I should have provided more
details to make it a bit clearer.
I will buy a gigabit switch as I am re-wiring the house with CAT6. It
is a regular house and I plan to put the switch in the attic, no run
longer than 50m. There won't be anything special going on but I do
seem to have acquired a large amount of IT equipment over the years
(NAS, few (~8) servers (dual NIC), network printer, games consoles,
~12 clients etc) - it adds up very quickly - I need to consolidate.
That is why I had thought about 24/48 idea. I would like to run VoIP
between the rooms and didn't want to buy a switch that wouldn't
support it or enable it.
Cisco is always good but very expensive. I had thought of one of the
HPs as the warranty is still "lifetime" I believe; I will skip the
consumer stuff. The managed/unmanaged or VLANs piece isn't an issue,
it's just me at home, unless that is required for the VoIP.
I am looking for something that will do for 3-5 years so I don't feel
stupid in 12 months time that I didn't buy one with X functionality so
I can't do VoIP for example.
Regards,
B.
