http://wiki.debian.org/KDE has details of how to go with Debian + KDE.
You should be able to select KDE as an option during a typical Debian
install.
Video config is pretty good these days - it's been a while since I had
to hand-configure anything (unless you have really new or unusual video
hardware). For user-friendliness ubuntu / kubuntu is probably a slightly
better choice (although I use both Debian and Ubuntu extensively).
