I've used VMware's thin client solutions quite succesfully in the past.
TCO is quite a bit less than expected when you use a linux distro instead of
windows.
You can save quite a bit on both RAM and disk space using VMware's
"Transparent Page Sharing" and "Linked clones" features.
This helps to offset the cost of 15k SAS disks and ECC RAM.
