It is a clearcase server. The processes will have to wait till Christmas to be stopped.

If the files are held as '(deleted)' then they're deleted from (and not visible in) the filesystem, but until the last open file handle is dropped the inodes and disk space will not be released.
This should only require a stop/start of whatever process is holding them open, not a full reboot.
