I'd also be willing to bet (were I a betting man) that you have an Intel
graphics chipset and you will find (if you take a look in your dmesg or system
logs) messages in the style of:
[drm:i915_get_vblank_counter] *ERROR* trying to get vblank count for disabled
pipe 0
If so, unfortunately Ubuntu (and Linux mostly at the moment) is not for you
because someone decided we should all have an experimental (broken!) Intel
driver. There are a number of bugs related to this but it appears the intel
driver brokenness is at the root of most (all?) of them.
