Thanks for posting that
iostat was one of those things that I read about, played with once or
twice and forgot about ;-)
Now that you have reminded me of it I might actually remember to use it
the next time I am dealing whith suspected Disk I/O issues ;-)
iotop is another handy tool as is latencytop (requires X I think)
all these require kernel support for the relevant system timers etc,
Most kernels come with these enabled but if doing a custom kernel, it's
probably better to have these enabled even if there is a theoretical
slight performance hit under very high load since without them you can't
actually investigate why your system is keeling over ..
Another one for the laptop people is powertop, Bootchart is good fun
too, if you want to try to work out why it takes so long to boot up.
