I presume you are trying to debug a crash? Honestly, I'd just:

# gdb crack-attack
(gdb) run
[...]
(gdb) bt

This will get you a backtrace. No need to be root, unless I'm missing
something important.

If you post the backtrace here, along with an explanation of the
problem you are encountering, I'm sure we can help. :)
