[ILUG] Non-GUI login screen on debian

[ILUG] Non-GUI login screen on debian

Hi,

In RHEL, if I want to default to a GUI login screen, I set the default
runlevel in /etc/inittab to 5. If I want to default to a non-GUI login
screen ("console mode"?), I set the default runlevel to 3 in /etc/inittab.

Since I started using Debian Sarge, I've never known the equivalent in
Debian. My experience is that the default login screen depends on
whether you have a display manager (gdm, kdm, etc.) installed or not,
and the default runlevel remains at 2.

Can someone point me to the relevant resource describing how I can keep
kdm installed, but default to a non-GUI login screen, please? Either
that, or let me know on the list how to do it, that is.

Thanks,

Éibhear
