One issue which it might be useful to take into account is what they're
being told by their teachers. It seems many of them (the teachers) have
been well-indoctrinated to believe that free software is evil. I was
talking to a clueless teacher recently who was genuinely shocked to hear
that I use freely-available software produced by volunteers. She had
been on a Microsoft "course".
In other areas kids are rightly being told that volunteering and sharing
are good things, but not when it comes to computer software, it seems.
