It depends on what you're doing, but I've certainly found Scribus
excellent for my requirements. I used it to build up some large (A0)
posters for a conference last year and found that I was able to learn
how to use it relatively quickly, and it was able to do everything I
needed it to.
Used it on two machines (desktop and laptop) and found it stable on
both. It really demonstrated to me why you need at least two big
monitors for doing that kind of stuff though - using it on the laptop
was not fun (though if you have a large high-res screen on your laptop
it should be okay.)
