[ILUG] Slightly OT: Setting up Asterisk PBX on my home network

[ILUG] Slightly OT: Setting up Asterisk PBX on my home network

Afternoon folks,

Slightly off topic but I thought someone on the list may be able to help me
or at least point me in the right direction.

I have a home network set up with UPC as my ISP. I have a Cisco Router that
supplies broadband and phone services. I was hoping to set up a PBX system
so that I could add more phones around the house however I've no idea where
to start.

I'm unsure of what hardware I need to set this up. I have no problem setting
up a dedicated *nix box and running Asterisk on it but once that is done I'm
unsure of where to go from there.

For those of you that are not familiar with the UPC set up there is a Cisco
cable modem has 4 ethernet ports and 2 RJ-11 ports. The existing phone is
connected to one of the RJ11 ports.

Can I connect the RJ11 cable into an Asterisk server via a modem (or do I
need other hardware for this) and if so how do I get other phones connected
once this is done.

I am hoping to use the existing UPC phone number and was hoping that I could
do this without using services like Blueface etc.

I also read on a previous ILUG thread that people were able to get their
mobile phones to ring along with the house phone. This is something that I
would be interested in too but my main aim is to try and get the PBX system
running.

Hope I've been clear enough with what I'm hoping to achieve and any help
would be very much appreciated.

Mick
