A modem won't do the job. You'll need an FXO card. Digium (who sponsor
Asterisk) hardware is the best supported by Asterisk, but there are plenty
of alternatives (and outright clones) available. Digium's list is at
http://www.digium.com/en/products/analog/ . You can use standard phone
handsets, VoIP handsets or VoIP soft phones. Softphones and VoIP handsets
will connect to Asterisk over your home's ethernet network. You can connect
conventional phone handsets using FXS interfaces. Most telephony cards have
multiple interfaces and support both FXO and FXS connections, so you could
configure a 4 port card to connect to one phone line (using FXO) with 3
handsets hanging off it (using FXS).
