[ILUG] OT questions about AMD CPUs

[ILUG] OT questions about AMD CPUs

Hello All,

Somewhat off topic but id like some opinions on which processor to base my
new pc around.

Currently im running a Dell Vostro laptop with a core duo at 1.6 Ghz, so
it wont be hard to get something faster.

On komplett.ie I can get a nice AMD Athlon II X2 (dual core) at 3.0 Ghz
for €61.

The cheapest quad core offering runs in at €92 for 2.6 Ghz per core.

Ill be triple booting Linux/Windows/Haiku OS doing the usual multimedia
and gaming.

- Is there any real reason to spend more on the quad core? Has anyone made
a similar decision in the past? Obviously the slower clock on the quad core
will affect single threaded applications.

- Does anyone know if the boxed CPUs from Komplett include the cooler and
fan?

- Has anyone bought a triple core and sucessfully unlocked the fourth
core?

- Oliver
