You could try something like Tinycore Linux (http://tinycorelinux.com/).
I'm curious though as to why you say that IBM doesn't support X11
forwarding. What evidence do you have (other than it not working) that it
is specifically the fault of the IBM software? Is it looking for an X11
Extension that just isn't supported with XMing on Cygwin, perhaps?
If you think that you'll be able to display from the IBM server (Linux,
AIX?) to your VM, then I guess that X11 forwarding must be working???
Have you tried any other Windows-based X servers, for instance?
