Wow, that IBM spiel sounds like mumbo-jumbo to me :-)  Esp the graphical 
operations being much more complex...

In theory, with an appropriate X server that supports the required 
extensions you need, it shouldn't matter what OS you're running on...  In 
practice, as you are seeing, there is obviously some subtle difference 
between your working X server and non-working setups...


I think they just aren't interested in expending engineering effort in 
supporting it.

It seems quite weird that the mouse isn't obeyed in one case and is in 
another.

I presume you are running with a root window - if so, is it possible 
you're running a funny window manager in the non-working case? Have you 
tried an alternative window manager? i.e. a bog standard TWM or MWM vs 
Metacity, for instance?

Also, have you tried the rootless version of Cygwin/X, which allows 
Windows to perform the window management?
