skills of Linux/Unix requirements plus some extras such as IPv6. The

IT Systems Administrator, Geophysics Section
Background
The Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) is an independent
statutory research body established in 1940. Through its three
constituent Schools it pursues fundamental research in celtic studies,
theoretical physics and cosmic physics. The Institute is funded by and
reports directly to the Department of Education and Skills.
Position
The position is full-time and is based in the Geophysics Section of
the School of Cosmic Physics located at No. 5 Merrion Square, Dublin
2. Appointment will be on the basis of a fixed-term contract for three
years.
The successful candidate will be working in a challenging academic
environment, ensuring that staff and students have IT facilities to
suit their needs. They will be reporting to the Geophysics Senior
Professor (Head of the Geophysics Section), but working closely with
the Astrophysics IT Manager on all IT matters affecting the School of
Cosmic Physics as a whole and all shared facilities. They should be
innovative with excellent problem solving abilities as well as capable
of researching technologies on their own and suggesting new approaches
and systems to improve IT facilities.
Responsibilities :
Maintaining and supporting the Windows desktops for the School of
Cosmic Physics
Maintaining and supporting the Linux desktops and Servers for the
School of Cosmic Physics
In conjunction with the Astrophysics IT manager, maintaining all
network and other shared resources for the School of Cosmic Physics
Improving network and services to better suit IT needs of the staff
and students.
Skills (required) :
Good overall windows knowledge (Windows XP and up to 7)
Good understanding of networks (TCP/IP, IPv4, DHCP, VLANs, IPv6 a plus)
Linux administration (GNU/Linux Debian/Ubuntu/CentOS experience
preferred, package management, security)
A rudimentary understanding of programming languages
Daemons/Services (Samba, NFS, OpenLDAP, DNS, Postfix, Apache, Squid)
Virtualisation (KVM but experience with others a plus)
The successful candidate should have at least some of:
Experience with OpenSource software (Firefox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice ...)
Sun Solaris, MacOS X, FreeBSD administration
Wireless (setup/maintenance and security, exposure to Radius a plus)
Firewalling (primarily iptables), intrusion detection, system hardening, vpns
Creating linux packages from source archives
Router and switch configuration (Cisco, Dell, Huawei, Juniper, Extreme
Networks)
Scripting skills (bash, tcsh)
VoIP (Asterisk)
The salary attaching to the post is at the rate applicable to the
first point of the Senior Technical Officer scale, which is currently
€48,401 per annum as at 1st Jan 2010. (new entrants on full PRSI
paying pension contribution). The person appointed will report
directly to the Head of the Geophysics Section and be subject to the
general conditions of service of Institute employees. Further details
