Just to put a conclusion on the story:
Updated BIOS, and didn't make any noticeable improvement in this case.
Replaced CPU cooler (new heatsink, fan, paste), and didn't make any
difference (also xsensors didn't show anything crazy during a crash).
Ran memtests for over 40 hours (still running!) no crash, and no
errors found (memory probably ok... no guarantee of course)
System seemed to hang once when using the BIOS setup utility (bad sign)...
Problem seems to be CPU or MoBo, and I don't want to put any money
into buying AM2 bits, nor to invest in a high-powered modern (AM3 or
the like) board, so I decided to order a mini ITX board with 4 SATA
connectors, which will allow me to replace the important functions of
the box, and which I can use for a low-power system in the near
future.
Thanks, once again, for all the help,
Michael
