In addition to learning the basics of a programming language, you
should also learn general algorithms. There's a number of good books
out there, and it probably helps to read at least 2.
A good way to get practical experience is to tinker on some free
software project you're interested in. Try and make little
modifications to it to test your understanding, and to make yourself
read other people's code. Can help a lot.
