Let's share thoughts then... All this only proves you are two old grumpy users who never managed to get use to it... It has lost this and that... 1997, well there has been water under the bridges fellahs, new software etc... Like any brew it has good and bad years all right... Correct me, if I am wrong, but this discussion started with Gnome malfunctioning right, then Q.E.D ... I am probably as "old" as you are but I keep on my toes ( and my hairs too BTW) and never take anything for granted. For as much as I understand the frustration, Steph has a point, maybe Albert should consider LTS over a cutting edge version?
I felt this all thread might put off some people. KDE is not worse than any other GUI it even tend to be a tad simpler from a newbie point of view... All this of course said with the greatest respect for my fellow Linux users especially those I have shared with some very interesting conversation about advocating linux since October 1998 in GW2K :-)
