	Fortunately, companies like Google are providing a reasonable hosted
mail and calendar service which we use. Thunderbird and Lightning appear
to work well, with some limitations (for example, I have not
satisfactorily got scheduling resources like meeting rooms working
without having to cut and paste random machine generated e-mail
addresses into appointments.)

	It's not perfect, but it's a pretty good start and appears to be
working for us better than hosted exchange is working for you - perhaps.
And Google assure me that the data and service is hosted on Linux
machines :)
