For the record - I'm a strong and committed FOSS advocate.
There's a big BUT coming:
Gerard, if you're trying to start a new business then you need to
focus your time on revenue generating core business activities rather
than spend you time fannying about with GNUCash and other unsuitable
FOSS accounting packages. Trust me - I have the scars to prove it.
Install VirtualBox, then install the Windows CD which no doubt came
with your desktop / laptop on that. Then /invest/ (and there is a
serious return on this investment) Quickbooks [1] which will handle
all your:
* bank accounts
* customisable PDF quotes / estimates and invoices
* suppliers and their invoices
* VAT (cash or invoice basis and cash basis is great for startups)
* VAT returns
* memorised / automated transactions for recurring invoices / bills
It's fairly intuitive to use and you'll be flying in no time.
For your year end, it will print off all your accountant reports and
as long as you can keep it up to date and your bank accounts balanced
with it, you should be able to negotiate a better deal with your
accountant who will have less work to do (I've done that three years
running also).
The nice thing about Quickbooks is you can do as many companies as you
like with it as well as set up test / playground companies.
