RVM looks good, I will give it a go. He can mess about all he wants and
I can keep him away from my files.

I would recommend you using RVM (http://beginrescueend.com/rvm/install/)
which will allow you to use multiple versions of ruby without having to
install them using apt. I've been using it instead of installing from
repos on different boxes to keep consistent versions and such.
