Head of IT in the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies
The Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) is looking for an
outstanding person to be head of a newly established integrated team
responsible for the planning, implementation, delivery and support of IT
services throughout DIAS, a research-focused organisation heavily
dependent on advanced IT infrastructure. The integrated IT system and
support unit will address the needs of all three constituent schools
(Celtic Studies, Theoretical Physics and Cosmic Physics) as well as the
central administration. The position requires good management and people
skills as well as a high level of technical competence. The person
appointed will be expected to monitor and test emerging technologies and
advise the Institute on strategic investments in the IT area required to
retain its place as a leading-edge research institution. Participation in
IT research projects will be encouraged where appropriate.
Required Technical Skills:
Good overall windows knowledge (especially Samba)
Good understanding of networks (TCP/IP, IPv4, VLANs, IPv6)
Understanding of BGP/IS-IS/OSPF
Linux administration (GNU/Linux Debian/Ubuntu/CentOS experience
preferred, package management, security)
Understanding of programming and scripting languages
Familiarity with standard Daemons/Services (Samba, NFS, OpenLDAP, DNS,
Postfix, Apache, Squid)
Virtualisation (KVM but experience with others an advantage)
In addition the successful candidate should have at least some experience of:
OpenSource software (Firefox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice ...)
Sun Solaris, MacOS X, FreeBSD administration
Wireless (setup/maintenance and security, exposure to Radius a plus)
Firewalling (primarily iptables), intrusion detection, system hardening,
vpns
Creating linux packages from source archives
Router and switch configuration (Cisco, Dell, Huawei, Juniper, Extreme
Networks)
VoIP telephony (Asterisk and SIP) and Videoconferencing (H.323)
Required Human and Management skills:
Excellent team management skills
Ability to set priorities and administer budgets
Experience of ordering and procurement (public and European e-tendering
experience an advantage)
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
The salary attaching to the post is 55,903 per annum and appointment will
be on the basis of a fixed-term contract for three years. Further details
