Coming late to this party:
> Github offers an enterprise edition which is interesting though expensive.
Very. But they also have decently priced hosted services and I can't say
enough good things about GitHub.
If you must host on your own infrastructure:

Indeed. A lot of moving parts. They seem to have done a lot of work
recently on installers, decent documentation and ready to roll virtual
machines images which may help.
One that I suspect you missed which works *really* well for us:
http://www.atlassian.com/software/stash/overview
For <=10 users you can't beat $10. It's quite cheaper that GitHub
Enterprise for up to 25 users but lacks a lot of features. That said,
they are in a rapid development cycle.
Only downside is that it is a Java application and so it takes quite a
bit of resources (memory) to run it; especially if it's alongside Jira
and Confluence. They have some other pretty cool tools including
Fisheye/Crucible. But all of these only make sense for small companies
or companies with wads of cash.
