I got similar errors following an apt-get upgrade the other day. The
solution was to "apt-get purge" the relevant PHP module (I think it was
suhosin in my case), since "apt-get remove" will leave configuration
files in place.

Obviously, this comment will be less relevant if you're not on a
Debian-family dist.
