Well you can use both ;-)
the nice thing about denyhosts is that it uses a distributed list of
'miscreant' IP's so a great many attempts will be blocked before they
even get one try at SSH.
fail2ban is great and can do all sorts of things, one of the things I
use it for is parsing asterisk logs and dropping brute force attempts on
our asterisk servers
