Hi all,

I'm trying to install Fedora 8 from a live CD onto a laptop. The laptop is
old and is unable to use the graphical installation process (I gave up
after about 30 mins of waiting for it to boot up).

I know that there is a text based installation method but for reasons
unknown I cannot get it started. The book that the CD came with instructs
that I hit tab on an initial boot menu, then type "text" as a parameter to
the vmlinuz0 instruction that this brings up. This does not appear to do
anything as it just carries on trying to boot up into a GUI. I've tried a
number of variations, including replacing the parameter "rhgb" with "text"
("rhgb" comes up with the original vmlinuz0 instruction and I believe it
has something to do with booting into a GUI.

I've tried to enter text mode on a much newer laptop in case some unknown
issue specific to the old laptop was the cause. The same thing happens,
despite entering "text" as instructed in my book, linux proceeds to boot
into one of the graphical desktops (KDE I think) and then allows for
installation via an icon on the desktop.

If anybody is able to shed some light on this I would be very grateful.
Thank you.
Peter
