A windows system is fubar *shock*

I want to backup the whole drive (28gb) to a usb drive. Yes it's usb2 
and the knoppix
cd detected the usb2 card and hard drive.

I have it doing the following atm:
cp -R  /mnt/hda1/* /mnt/sda1/backupC/

However I believe this will take forever for 28gb? Is there a quicker way?
