the d-link issue is definately down to d-link being cheep.
I have the packet loss in my company using lastmile too and know a few
people who tried to use a d-link who had to restart the unit at least
once a week.
What happens is that the d-link is not capable of handling hughe files
or to many connections and simply hangs it self. Happens with a few
other low end routers too. The connection between me and my neighbor is
solid as a rock no packet loss what so ever. He could be 2-3km away and
the signal would still be perfect. I have here 2x18DBi Antennas with the
Accesspoints screwed into them ;).

Unfortunately I could not get the Asus 600g working with the PPPOE from
lastmile so I had to make use of the d-link.
