[ILUG-Social] House wiring.

[ILUG-Social] House wiring.

On Thu, Apr 26, 2001 at 11:19:19AM +0100 or so it is rumoured hereabouts,
Damian O' Sullivan thought:

I've no idea of prices but Intech Ireland are charging (before VAT):

305m cat-5 cable reel	IEP60
24-port patch panel	IEP90
RJ45 Socket IEP06	(Don't know how many ports)

You don't necessarily need a patchpanel, you could instead just terminate
each wired-in cable with an RJ45 plug and plug these directly into your
hub.

I'll be interested to see what prices are like for this gear as it's a
project I have in mind myself.

NB! NB! NB! For those planning to do this sometime with their newly built
house!

If your new house is still being built and you can persuade the builder to
let you, get in there at "first fix" (This is when stuff like plumbing and
wiring is put in place and before plastering is done) and install the
cat-5 cable. It's so much easier to install this stuff *before* the
plasterboards go up. You don't have to do anything else at that stage,
just get the wiring into the walls. Later on, when you have time, you can
get patch panel and sockets and do the actual connecting / commissioning.
I *so* wish I'd thought of this 10 years ago when my place was built. It
would save me so much grief now.
