I know this feeling.
I've encountered the same problem twice in the past with Redhat installs.
I just gave up and took the easy solution. I installed Mandrake.
Was trying to install RH6.2 at least once. Possibly 7.0 the other time.
Both time it died booting off the cd at:
/sbin/loader
And as you said it all worked in windows :-(
