Yup. That's 433MHz kit. I've already thought of that
(considering that's actually the business Blue Tree
is in :-) However, range is probably too short
(by design).
In fact, what I'd do is take off-the-shelf 433 components
and a cheap MCU (PIC or similar) and try and run it off
a 3V lithium battery. For my base station, I could probably
grab some old obsoleted development boards from the office.
The key features are light-weight and low-power.
And I'd thought about the iButton, but the non-wireless bit
is a snag.
