no choice really.. Eurosport Digital is encrypted, operator only. The 
english free-to-air channels are encrypted but free if you ring a UK 
1850 type number..

if BBC / ITV / C4 /RTE were accessible via satellite without paying
Sky, i wouldnt... but they're not. (afaik)

what kind of interface is it between the dish and the set-top, and the 
set-top and your TV?

There are quite a few digital TV cards available for linux. why not 
build your own?
