[Webdev] perl FORMAT in PHP?

[Webdev] perl FORMAT in PHP?

Is there anything similar to the Perl FORMAT stuff in PHP, 3 or 4?
For those who don't know, FORMAT allows you to specify a template
report. You fill in the blanks with variables and you can specify the
length of each string fairly precisely. Positioning is a doddle too and
reminded me a bit of the AS/400..
Previously I've done reports in Perl but I'm working on reports
generated by a PHP script for a new project which generates HTML.
Kevin Lydas' question about Perl and Postscript on the ILUG list
reminded me that I realy need more control over the formatting than HTML
allows and a quick look at the PDF stuff in PHP and I can see it's
overboard for what I want. (and I don't have time to learn about PDF!)
Has anyone found a nice formatting class for PHP to print out nice text
reports?

Donncha.
