You can use standard HTTP_AUTH, with .htpasswd files. Or PHP has AUTH hooks
built in, so you can use your MySQL database to authenticate users using
$PHP_AUTH_USER and $PHP_AUTH_PW. Or you can use DMB, or ... :)
