Depends what you're developing in. At the lowest level, you can open a pipe
to the remote mail SMTP port and talk to it. This would be poor practice,
because you're not taking advantage of your own box's ability to manage
queued mail. Next up would be to open a pipe to your local SMTP port and
talk to it.

Both of these solutions require that you have a reasonable :-) understanding
of the SMTP conversation protocol. Higher level solutions make things much
easier - you can simply call mutt (or some appropriately endowed mailer) and
have it do what you want. Some languages (e.g. Perl) have mail sending
modules which give you an easier interface to the previously mentioned
low-level solutions.
