These are just some opinions on the design above. Basically I think it
is a good start.
There is a lot of whitespace in the design which gives it an austere
look. The buttons could be placed on the right hand side as this is
ergonomically better. It is also better from a search engine indexing
point of view since the most recent text update gets hit first.
The banner segment is too widely spaced and using the search box as a
divider at the end of the buttons could be better for layout. The grayed
toolbar at the top is good but again it would be better to use it as a
divider about half-way down the page. This would enable the lower part
of the page to be used for resource listings and a listing of current
message headers from linux.ie. This could be an automated process
running on as a cronjob. It would pull in some headlines from various
news sources.
