Codeing properly is pretty much the same in any language, its just common sense. Take a look at some books like the following

The Practice Of Programming - Kernighan & Pike [1]

A bit more heavy weight, but invaluable none the less.

The Art Of Computer Programming - Donald Knuth [2]

And if your doing any OO stuff, get the O'Reilly Nutshell Guide to UML [3] and Design Patterns by the gang of four [4].

The reality is the language should be irrelevant - choose the best one for the job.

It also helps a lot to understand the OS that your working on, from a system level, best intro to this from a unix point of view is something like O'Reillys SVR4 programming intro [5].

Finally compilers, look into the something like The Dragon Book [6]

Its a bit long winded, at the very least look at The Practice Of Programming, apply what it says to php.
